What Happens During a Gold Appraisal?

You might be wondering what happens during an appointment, and it might seem unsafe to bring your gold someplace, where the appraisal process is unclear or unknown. How are the items weighed? Are the items tested in any way? What happens with diamonds, stones, and other decorations? Are the items or the material damaged during the process? Am I obligated to sell afterwards?

At Gold Arthur the whole appraisal process is designed with the customer in mind. You get to follow the whole process step-by-step from start to finish. Everything is done right in front of you so that you get a clear picture of how your gold is appraised.

A Calm and Private Appraisal

No pressure, no stress. The appraisal happens between you and one of our Gold Experts in a quiet and private environment with no other customers. You can bring with you any and all items, even if you are unsure of their material and genuinity. There is no minimum or maximum limit to how much gold you can bring, each piece is valuated professionally and thoroughly, no matter how it looks or how much it weighs.

The appraisal is free of charge and you choose if you want to sell at the end of the appraisal. Let’s look at the different steps of the valuation process, so that you know what to expect.

1. Inspection and Sorting

First, the items are checked for marks, as many usually contain marks indicating fineness and, for example, when and where they have been made. The items are sorted according to material and fineness to give you the right price for each item.

If the marks are missing or unclear, we test the item’s material and fineness with an acid test. The item is scratched against a touch stone, which leaves a thick and visible gold mark on the stone. Then, testing acids are applied to the mark. The reaction between the acid and the mark reveals the item’s material and purity.

The testing is done safely and professionally, and it does not harm your jewellery. Testing does not lower the item’s value and you get to see each step of the process.

2. Weighing the Gold

The next step is weighing the gold. We only use verified precision scales, and they are always turned towards you so that you can read the weight from the display. The value of the gold depends on weight and purity, not on design and in what condition the piece is.

We weigh and appraise the item solely on the material. Diamonds, stones, and other decorations are not included in the price. If you allow it, we remove diamonds and stones from the items before weighing, so that you can take the decorations with you. If you wish to keep the decorations on the item during weighing, we subtract the approximate weight of them from the total weight before weighing.

A broken chain or an earring without backing is worth just as much as intact and complete pieces, as long as the weight and material are the same. If necessary, our Gold Experts test the items with acids to confirm the material and purity.

3. Calculating the Price

After verifying the materials and weighing your items, our Gold Experts calculate the price for you based on the current world market price. If you choose to sell, you will receive a receipt via SMS and e-mail.

No Obligation to Sell

Getting your gold valuated does not mean you are obligated to sell. You are more than welcome to think it over before choosing if you want to sell or not. If you choose not to sell, we give you all your items back, and you are always welcome to visit us again later. We are happy you visited us, whether you choose to sell or not.
